James Lee Park & Beach in Destin: Parking, Amenities & Our Local Favorites

James Lee Park & Beach is one of the most convenient public beach accesses in the Crystal Beach area of Destin. Located directly on Scenic Highway 98, the park combines a beautiful stretch of Gulf beach with free parking, restrooms, showers, picnic areas, a playground and multiple beach access points.

For visitors staying near Crystal Beach without private beachfront access, James Lee Park is one of the easiest places to enjoy the Gulf for a few hours or an entire beach day.

For us, though, James Lee Park means something a little different.

We have never packed up our chairs and spent a beach day there. The beach directly behind Crystal Dunes 503 is quieter, less crowded and only an elevator ride away. Instead, James Lee has become the destination at the end of one of our favorite beach walks – and home to a couple of Destin traditions that usually involve The Crab Trap.

James Lee Park at a Glance

James Lee Park is located at 3510 Scenic Highway 98 in Destin, close to the Okaloosa/Walton County line. It is owned and maintained by Okaloosa County and is the only Okaloosa County-maintained park within Destin.

The park offers:

• Free public beach access

• 170 parking spaces

• Six accessible parking spaces

• Limited golf-cart-only parking

• Multiple beach access points

• Restrooms and changing areas

Parking at James Lee Park

Parking is one of James Lee Park’s biggest advantages.

Many of the smaller public beach accesses around Crystal Beach have very limited parking. James Lee Park has 170 spaces, including six accessible spaces and limited golf-cart-only parking, making it a much more practical choice if you’re staying across Scenic Highway 98 or elsewhere nearby and need to drive to the beach.

That doesn’t mean we’d count on finding the perfect parking space at the busiest time of a summer afternoon. Destin is still Destin in peak season.

However, we’ve found the parking especially convenient when we head to The Crab Trap for an early dinner. It’s only a short drive from Crystal Dunes 503, and parking at James Lee makes getting there simple.

Beach Facilities & Family Amenities

James Lee Park works particularly well for families because you aren’t simply getting a pathway to the sand.

There are restrooms with changing areas, showers, picnic tables and pavilions. Nine dune walkovers provide access toward the beach, and there is a playground near The Crab Trap.

Our son is grown and married, so we haven’t personally used the playground with young children. We do, however, see plenty of kids enjoying it when we’re there for one of our Crab Trap stops.

Beach wheelchairs are also available for James Lee Park through the Destin Fire Control District. Current County information says they are offered free on a first-come, first-served basis from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Memorial Day through Labor Day. Because schedules and availability can change, call ahead if accessible beach equipment is important to your visit.

And, as with any Destin beach day, always check the beach flags before entering the Gulf. Double red flags mean the water is closed for swimming due to powerful rip currents that can sweep even the strongest swimmers out to sea. Stay safe, check today’s conditions on our Beach Safety page.

Who Is James Lee Park Best For?

If you’re staying at Crystal Dunes 503, we wouldn’t suggest loading the car with beach gear and driving to James Lee Park for the day. You already have direct access to a beautiful – and generally quieter – stretch of beach right behind the building.

But that’s not the situation for everyone visiting Crystal Beach.

James Lee Park is particularly useful for visitors staying across Scenic Highway 98 or in nearby accommodations without private Gulf access. The combination of parking, restrooms, showers and beach access makes it much easier to spend several hours along the Gulf.

It’s also a lively part of the Crystal Beach neighborhood. Families come and go from the beach, kids play around the playground, people gather at The Crab Trap, and Scenic 98 runs just behind it all.

For us, that’s part of its appeal.

Our Walk to James Lee Park & The Crab Trap

One of our favorite traditions at Crystal Dunes is considerably simpler than most vacation activities.

We walk down the beach.

From Crystal Dunes 503, we head east along the Gulf toward James Lee Park and The Crab Trap. It’s a nice enough distance to feel like you’ve actually gone somewhere, while still being an easy walk on a beautiful Destin day.

And there is usually a reward waiting at the other end.

For these daytime or late-afternoon walks, our routine is pretty predictable: a piña colada and smoked tuna dip, often with something casual to eat.

Sometimes we linger long enough to enjoy the late-afternoon Gulf before starting the walk back along the beach.

There are plenty of bigger attractions in Destin, but some of our favorite vacation memories come from routines like this. No reservation. No itinerary. Just a walk down the beach and a place we enjoy waiting at the other end.

Piña colada by the beach at The Crab Trap in Destin
One of our favorite Crystal Dunes traditions: walk the beach to The Crab Trap, stop for a piña colada and smoked tuna dip, then walk home along the Gulf.

Then There’s the Crab-Leg Dinner

Our traditional crab-leg dinner at The Crab Trap is a different outing.

At least once during a typical week in Destin, we make the short drive from Crystal Dunes rather than walking. That way we can settle in, have a bigger dinner and take our time without finishing the evening with a dark walk back along the beach after a very enjoyable meal.

The Crab Trap has also worked well for our larger family gatherings.

One particularly memorable crab-leg dinner came during my mother’s 90th-birthday trip to Destin. My brother and sister were there along with spouses and kids, and The Crab Trap gave us exactly what we wanted: a casual Gulf-front restaurant where a large family could simply relax and enjoy dinner together.

That’s probably a better explanation of why we keep returning than anything you’ll find on a restaurant list.

The beach-walk visit and the crab-leg dinner are two completely different experiences. Somehow, both have become part of our Destin traditions.

The Crab Trap at James Lee Park

The Crab Trap sits directly Gulf-front at James Lee Park, which makes it particularly convenient for combining time at the beach with lunch, drinks or dinner.

For us, though, its appeal isn’t really about checking off another Destin restaurant. It’s the location.

Walking up from the beach in the afternoon feels completely different from driving over for crab legs with the family in the evening. We enjoy both.

A Few Things to Know Before You Go

James Lee Park is a public beach, so local beach and park rules apply.

One particularly important rule at James Lee is the emergency access lane. Okaloosa County rules require a 25-foot setback from the Gulf side of the dune on public beaches at James Lee Park so emergency access remains unobstructed.

Beach conditions can also change quickly. You can receive the current Okaloosa County beach-flag information by texting BEACH to 44144.

Rules, facilities and programs can change, so we recommend checking Okaloosa County Beach Safety if something specific is important to your visit.

Is James Lee Park worth visiting if I’m staying at Crystal Dunes?

We think James Lee Park is worth knowing, but probably not because you need another beach.

Crystal Dunes 503 already gives you direct access to a quieter stretch of Gulf beach. For us, James Lee is instead part of the neighborhood – a destination for a beautiful beach walk, an easy place to reach The Crab Trap and one of those familiar spots that has become part of our Destin routine.

If you’re staying nearby without private beach access, the answer is different. James Lee’s combination of public beach, parking, restrooms, showers and other facilities makes it one of the most convenient public beach options in the Crystal Beach area.
