After making the nine-hour drive from Louisville, we usually arrive mid to late afternoon. We don’t spend much time unpacking. Instead, we head straight to the beach and begin walking east with the Gulf beside us.

If you’ve never tried their smoked tuna dip, don’t picture the smooth version served in in many restaurants. It’s lightly whipped while still full of smoky chunks of fresh tuna prepared on-site. It’s become one of those simple traditions we look forward to every trip.

I enjoy the piña coladas, although after one I’ll usually switch to bourbon or a High Noon to watch my sugar intake.

Eventually we stop talking about work.

Then we stop thinking about work.

Once schools are back in session, Destin simply slows down. Traffic becomes manageable. Parking gets easier. Restaurant waits become shorter.

The restaurants, shops and attractions are still there.

Destin hasn’t changed.

Only the pace has changed.

And for us…That’s exactly the point.

Most people assume Labor Day marks the end of swimming season.

Not in Destin.

The Gulf has spent the entire summer warming.

September’s average Gulf temperature of approximately 84°F is actually warmer than May, June and even October. That makes September well suited for swimming, wading, paddleboarding and long days near the water.

Our September Morning Rhythm

Tanya and I do not transition into vacation at exactly the same speed.

After our Crab Trap tradition, she still likes unpacking, organizing a few things from our owner’s closet and adding the little touches that transform the condo into our home for the week. By the following morning, she is perfectly content to sleep a little later.

I usually wake first, make coffee and sit on the balcony. I may answer a few emails while the condo is still quiet, although the Gulf view makes it increasingly difficult to stay focused on work.

The first thought is almost always the same:

How peaceful this is.

Later, Tanya joins me with coffee and begins watching for dolphins. Somehow, she usually sees them first.

After a late breakfast, we often walk west toward Henderson Beach State Park. One of the things we’ve learned is not to over-plan Destin.

Some vacations are remembered because of expensive restaurants.

Ours are often remembered because we stopped for fresh seafood on the way home, opened the balcony doors and cooked dinner together while listening to the Gulf.

One tradition is buying Royal Red shrimp. Royal Reds are unlike any shrimp we’ve had elsewhere. Rich, buttery, sweet and almost lobster-like, they turn a simple shrimp scampi dinner into something that feels special.

Good conversation.

Simple.

Relaxed.

Perfect.

Other evenings we head out to Pazzo Italiano, Camille’s, or Bijoux. We may also enjoy building our own pizza at Vinnie McQuire’s, and we can often get a table even when the adjoining McGuire’s Irish Pub has a substantial wait.

However, after years of returning to Destin together, Tanya and I have learned that our favorite moments are usually much simpler.

A sunset that makes both of us stop talking for a few minutes.

For us, the best romantic getaways in Destin are not built around doing more. They are about finding a place that gives us permission to slow down and enjoy being together.

Begin With a Place That Lets You Slow Down

Destin stretches across several distinct beach areas. We have always been especially drawn to Crystal Beach, which sits between Henderson Beach State Park and Miramar Beach.

It feels close to everything without feeling like we are in the middle of everything.

Crystal Dunes Condo 503 has become our home base here. It sits directly on Crystal Beach and gives us something we value more with every visit: the ability to experience the Gulf without first getting into a car.

The condo has three bedrooms, three bathrooms and approximately 1,779 square feet. Yet the feature that changes the rhythm of a couples trip is much simpler—the spacious living area, kitchen and balcony all face the water.

We have stayed here with family and friends, celebrated birthdays and Thanksgiving, and filled every bedroom. Still, some of our favorite visits have been the quieter ones when it was just the two of us.

We usually begin the same way.

Open the balcony doors.

Listen to the Gulf.

And realize that whatever was waiting for us at home can probably wait a little longer.

Take the First Walk Before Making Any Plans

There is often a temptation to begin a vacation by unpacking everything, organizing the condo and deciding where to go next.

We rarely make it that far.

At some point, one of us looks toward the beach and says:

“Let’s take a walk.”

That first walk feels different from the others. The trip has officially begun, but none of the days have been spent yet. Everything is still ahead of us.

For a quieter, more romantic walk, we head west toward the shoreline beside Henderson Beach State Park. Other times, we walk east toward James Lee Park and The Crab Trap.

We are not walking to exercise.

We are not trying to reach a specific number of steps.

We are simply walking because the beach is there.

Tanya will usually notice the dolphins before I do. I will stop to photograph the water, the birds or the way the late-afternoon light falls across the sand.

Eventually, one of us turns around.

There is no finish line.

One of our easiest first-evening traditions is stopping at The Crab Trap near James Lee Park.

It is not our formal romantic dinner. That comes later.

There is usually a moment when the sky begins to change and conversations around the outdoor bar become quieter. People turn their chairs toward the Gulf. Phones come out. Children briefly stop running through the sand.

For a few minutes, everyone is watching the same thing.

We are too.

Our mornings at Crystal Dunes rarely begin with an alarm.

I usually make coffee first. Then I step onto the balcony to see what kind of Gulf has arrived overnight.

Some mornings the water is calm and clear.

Other mornings the waves are rolling in with more energy.

Occasionally, dolphins appear beyond the swimmers and beach chairs. Somehow, Tanya still seems to see them first.

We may talk about what we want to do that day.

Often, we decide not to decide yet.

That may be one of the most romantic parts of the trip.

At home, mornings tend to begin with calendars, messages and responsibilities. Here, they begin with coffee, the sound of the water and nowhere we have to be immediately.

A romantic getaway does not always need another activity.

Sometimes it needs a slower morning.

When we want a truly romantic dinner in Destin, Beach Walk Café is our first choice.

It is located at Henderson Park Inn, close enough to Crystal Dunes that we can walk there along the beach when conditions cooperate.

The setting is difficult to duplicate. The restaurant sits beside the Gulf near the protected shoreline of Henderson Beach State Park, while its kitchen emphasizes locally inspired ingredients and Gulf-to-table dining.

However, what makes it romantic is not simply the view.

It is the pace.

Dinner feels like part of the evening rather than something to complete before moving to the next activity. We can enjoy our favorite drink, watch the light change over the water and let the night unfold without rushing.

For us, this is the dinner we would choose for an anniversary, birthday or the one evening of a trip that we want to feel especially memorable.

Choose Bijoux When the Food Is the Destination

Not every romantic restaurant needs to sit directly on the beach.

When we want the meal itself to be the centerpiece of the evening, we enjoy Bijoux Restaurant + Spirits in Miramar Beach.

Its coastal cuisine, intimate atmosphere, thoughtful service and wine selections make it especially well suited for a quieter dinner together.

Beach Walk and Bijoux offer two different kinds of romantic evenings.

At Beach Walk, the Gulf is part of the dinner.

We genuinely enjoy both. The right choice depends on the kind of evening we want.

Rather than create a long list of every fine-dining restaurant in Destin, those are the two we would personally place at the top of our romantic getaway.

Some of Our Favorite Evenings Never Leave the Condo

Destin has many excellent restaurants.

Still, one of our favorite evenings requires no reservation at all.

We stop at a local seafood market and look for Royal Red shrimp. When they are available, we bring them back to the condo and make shrimp scampi with linguine.

There is something different about Royal Reds.

They are rich.

Buttery.

Sweet.

Almost lobster-like.

They can turn a relatively simple dinner into something that feels special.

The open kitchen allows us to cook without leaving the conversation. We open the balcony doors, pour something to drink and listen to the Gulf while dinner comes together.

Shrimp scampi.

Linguine.

Good conversation.

Simple.

Relaxed.

Perfect.

Some vacations are remembered because of an expensive restaurant.

Others are remembered because two people cooked dinner together with the balcony doors open while the Gulf provided the background—or perhaps some of their favorite music did.

Savor a Sunset Instead of Scheduling Every Minute

Destin sunsets have become one of our traditions, but we do not always watch them from the same place.

Sometimes we are at The Crab Trap.

Sometimes we are on the balcony.

Sometimes we walk onto the beach at the end of the day and sit in the sand.

Sometimes we take a drive and then walk out to the Destin East Jetty.

Nobody is talking.

Nobody needs to.

Those are difficult moments to schedule.

Yet somehow, they seem to find us whenever we leave enough room for them.

One sunset experience still on our own list is The Rooftop at Henderson Beach Resort. Its elevated setting overlooks Henderson Beach State Park and offers another perspective on a Destin sunset.

We have not experienced it together yet, so we are not calling it one of our favorites.

Not yet.

However, it is exactly the kind of place we would consider for a drink before or after dinner, and we plan to try it during a future visit.

Bring Home Something More Lasting Than a Souvenir

One of our favorite souvenirs from our Bora Bora honeymoon was not something we purchased in a shop.

It was a professional photography session.

Those photographs captured a specific moment in our lives, and they remain among our favorites.

We have never scheduled a professional session in Destin because I usually have a camera in my hand. Still, I understand why couples celebrating an engagement, honeymoon, anniversary or milestone birthday might want someone else behind the lens.

The best photographs are not necessarily perfectly posed.

They capture the way two people look at each other.

The way they walk together.

The way a particular trip felt.

A short beach session can produce something that remains meaningful long after the restaurant receipt and boarding pass have disappeared.

Leave One Day Almost Completely Unplanned

One of the most important things we have learned is not to over-plan Destin.

A beautiful beach day should not be interrupted simply because an itinerary says it is time to leave.

We may sit in the sun for a while with music playing, take a dip, walk the shoreline and then begin the cycle again.

Tanya can remain in the water for much of the afternoon when the Gulf is calm.

I am more likely to walk the beach with my camera.

Eventually, we meet back beneath the umbrella.

There are couples who reconnect through adventure and activity. Others reconnect by finally having enough time to do almost nothing together.

Both approaches are valid.

Our advice is simply to protect at least part of the trip from becoming another schedule.

Every couple enjoys Destin differently.

The experiences above are the ones we have enjoyed personally or genuinely plan to experience. However, several additional ideas consistently fit the kind of romantic getaway we would consider.
